STUDIES IN 1743 AND 1744. 1095
A. In no. 147 the following explanation of the memorable dream
of July 12 is given : "From what follows and from other indi
cations I perceived that this dream signified this: that I shall discover
the truths about internal sensations, but on the back, and obscurely
as to their front." The subject discussed in Codex 58, in all those
places where reference is made to this dream, is "internal sensation."
B. On July 4 (no. 148) we read in the Diary for 1744, "This
signifies that I have now finished writing on the senses in general
and the operation of the interior faculties ; which subject in the
form in which I have sketched it cannot be comprehended ; and that
now I approach the following part which treats on the brain."
From this it seems that on July 4 Swedenborg finished his rough
draught of Part III of the Regnum Animale, which treats of the
senses in general and the operation of the intellect. In the form in
which he then wrote it, but "in which it cannot be comprehended,"
it fills pages 1 to 197 of Codex 58. See Document 313, no. 73, and
also Document 310, Codex 58.
C. On August 1 (no. 162) Swedenborg began writing out Part III
of the "New Series" of the Regnum Animale for the press (see
Document 313, no. 77, p. 944), as appears from the following ex
planation: "This signifies that I was led to my work about the
senses, which I began writing [i. e. preparing for the press] to-day;
and that I did not wish to be drawn away thereby from that which
is more important." And in no. 163, on the same day, we read :
"This signifies the work upon which I have now entered ; the last
was upon the Brain. I find by this that I shall have God’s as
sistance in it ; for I believe that He will aid me in it."
D. On August 9 he had advanced as far as p. 26 of the printed
Latin Edition (no. 77) ; for in no. 165 he says, "This means that I
had not properly arranged and carried out the subject of the corpus
reticulare Malpighii;" this subject is treated by him on pp. 21 to 26
of Part III (nos. 495 to 499, English edition).
E. On September 16 Swedenborg had come as far as p. 144 of
the printed Latin edition (no. 77) ; for in no. 170 he says under the
above date, "This signifies that what I had written was well-pleasing;
it was the last of the first chapter on the sense of touch." The last
portion of this chapter which treats of the "Use of Touch," extends
from p. 130 to p. 144 of the Latin edition, and from p. 531 to p. 547
of the English Edition.
F. In no. 175, Swedenborg alludes to his dissertation on "Organic
Forms generally," which is contained in the first chapter on the
sense of touch; he says "It occurred to me in my thoughts whether
it was not most important to be with God and to live so, that He
