1094 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
D. On p. 167 (Dr. Im. Tafel’s edition, p. 194) we find written,
"This was represented to me by gold which I was carrying ; and
which, perhaps not very easily, opened the door within which a
large quantity of gold was lying on a table; this, namely [the gold] ,
would open for me the approach to spiritual things."
VII. On pp. 174, 175 and 187 of Codex 58 we find a direct
reference to one of the dreams recorded in the Diary for 1744. On
p. 174 (Dr. Im. Tafel’s edition, p. 202) Swedenborg says, "For this
reason those wonderful things happened to me in the night
between the first and second of July” (Propter hæc accidebant mihi
mirabilia ista nocte inter 1 et 2 Juli). On p. 175, in a passage
printed by Dr. Im. Tafel in his preface to Part VI, Section 2,
(no. 69, Part II, of Document 313) Swedenborg says, "The things
which I wrote here were foretold to me in a wonderful manner; see
the dream, July 1 × 2. I wrote this on July 2" (Haec quae scripsi
praenuntiata mihi sunt mirabiliter, vide somn. Juli 1 × 2 ; scripsi
Juli 2). The reader will notice that Swedenborg uses here the
identical mark, viz. X, to indicate the night between two days
which is also used in the Diary for 1744. A third allusion to this
dream is made on p. 187 (Dr. Im. Tafel’s edition, p. 215), "See the
dream between July 1 and 2" (Vide somnium 1-2 Juli). The dream
in question is contained in Document 209, no. 147.
VIII. In a part of Codex 58, not published by Dr. Im. Tafel,
(no. 76 of Document 313), we find the following allusions to spiritual
experiences:
A. On p. 202 (Swedenborg MSS. , Vol. VI, p. 62) we read : "There
is to be premised the experimental knowledge contained in Chapter VII,
p. LXXIII of the first cast (projectione) of the work [no. 56, A,
of Document 313, photo-lithographed edition, p. 134 to p. 140] ,
also perhaps what has been said concerning the motion of the brain
in Chapter I [no. 56, A, Document 313, photo-lithographed edition,
pp. 6 to 17] ; likewise what has been said concerning the cortical
and medullary substances generally in other places, both in the
things written and published. It is to be observed that I have been
[thus] commanded" ( Obs : jussus sum).
B. On p. 223 (Vol. VI, photo-lithographed edition, p. 83) we
find, "It is to be observed that these things are not to be inserted
in the chapter or thesis ; for this would be premature ; but they are
to be kept in reserve ; thus it seems to me I have been commanded"
(ita videor jussus). See also footnote on p. 145.
IX. If now we turn to the Diary of 1744 (Document 209), we
find there the following references to the contents of Codex 58
(nos. 73 and 76 of Document 313).
