THEOLOGY IN 1743 AND 1744. 1099
fore by Him alone all order is instituted and finished, and through
Him the way is continued from the Highest to the ultimates of
nature, and backwards, and thus both upwards and downwards”
(no. 91). And again we read, "The glory of the life of the Highest,
which continued flowing forth from one end of the universe to the
other, i. e. through ages of ages, from eternity to eternity, could
not be communicated to our minds, and still less to the lower powers
of our life, without causing there instantaneous death. For what
communion can there be of the Infinite with finite things ? or of Him
who is Most Holy and Most Just with ourselves, who are from dust,
and live in dust? Such a communion could not take place without
our being constantly charged by His Sanctity with impurity, and
without being condemned by His Justice, and assigned to death.
Therefore He begat His Image, or His Son from eternity, by whom
or by whose life He might mediately flow into the faculties of the
life of our bodies ; and because He is born for the sake of mediation,
and as the Only Love of the Highest, therefore He is His Life ...
This is the life which is properly called celestial, and which affects
the understanding and will of our minds" (Part III, no. 121 , photo
lithographic edition). This same doctrine is taught in the Ad
versaria in these words : "Messiah, the Only begotten Son of God,
is at the same time God and Man, and from Him comes all the
Divine which is in man" (Vol. I, no. 523, p. 359). It is also con
tained in the following definition of the Son of God : "The Son, the
the Only begotten of God, is His Only Love, our Messiah, who is
the King and Emperor of the kingdom of God in heaven and on
earth, and the soul of that community which is also called the City
and the Holy Jerusalem." This doctrine was also stated by Sweden
borg in the last part of the "Old Series" of the Regnum Animale
(Doeument 313, no. 67), which was published by Dr. Im. Tafel under
the title, De Anima, in these words : "The head or chief of heaven
is He, the Purest, who was without sin, i. e. our Saviour and
Preserver, Jesus Christ, in whom by faith and love we can alone
approach the Divine Throne" (p. 246).
This very doctrine that the Son of God is the only Mediator
between the Father and men, and also that He is the Only Love
of the Father we find repeatedly stated in the Diary for 1744, as
appears from the following passages :
"Christ in whom dwells the fulness of the Godhead, must alone
be addressed in prayer . . . He is omnipotent and the only Mediator"
(no. 40).
"The love of Christ constitutes the centre, and must be the
ultimate end" (no. 52).
