THEOLOGY IN 1743 AND 1744. 1101
because this faith is identical with the faith in the Infinite; so that
they who have no faith in Christ, or what is the same thing, who
deny Christ, cannot be saved ; for faith cannot be separated, and
cannot be in God and not at the same time in Christ. But those
who do not know that Christ came into the world, can, nevertheless,
believe in God or in the Infinite, and not at the same time deny
Christ ; wherefore they can also be saved ; for they believe in both,
because they do not deny; and they do not deny, because they do
not know. But their salvation can be only by Christ, who suffered
for the whole world; for those who do not know Him, as well as
for those who do know him, so that the only salvation is by
Christ."
In Part III of the "New Series" of the Regnum Animale (see
Document 313, no. 73), which Swedenborg wrote in the months of
May and June, 1744 (see Note 164, VI), and hence simultaneously
with the Diary for 1744, he says (p. 225), "Spiritual life consists
in the love of the supreme good or of God Himself, and of His
love, which is Christ Jesus," and again, "Without regeneration by
the Divine Spirit or the Spirit of Christ, we can by no means enter
the Kingdom of God."
IV. The Holy Spirit. Concerning the Holy Spirit we read in
the Adversaria, as follows : "Life itself proceeds from Jehovah the
Father, who is Truth and Goodness, by His Only begotten Son
who is love itself, and thus by the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from
Jehovah the Father by the Son" (Vol. I, no. 663, 431). Again it
is written in the Economia Regni Animalis, "As the sun of the
world flows in by mediating auras, so the Sun of life and of wisdom
flows in by the mediation of His Spirit" (Vol. II, no. 260). Again
we read in the Adversaria, "When Messiah is spoken of alone, then
also the Holy Spirit is understood which proceeds from Jehovah the
Father by the Son, i. e. from the Son Himself, the Only begotten
of God" (Vol. I, no. 510, p. 352). And in the Regnum Animale,
New Series, Part III (see Document 313, no. 73), published by
Dr. Tafel as Regnum Animale, Part IV, we read, "Without regener
ation by the Divine Spirit or the Spirit of Christ, we can by no
means enter the kingdom of God" (p. 225).
In the Diary for 1744 the nature of the Holy Spirit is described
thus: "All seemed in a wonderful, transcendent manner to approach
and conspire together; to rise up as it were and nestle itself in
infinitude as a centre, where Love itself was ; thence it seemed to extend
itself, around and thus down again. In this manner it moved by
an incomprehensible circle from the centre which was Love, around
and thus hither again . Afterwards I perceived in the spirit
