1102 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
that what proceeds from the centre which is Love, is the Holy
Spirit" (no. 52).
"Man’s thoughts contain within themselves no other end, and no
other reason, than what comes either from the Spirit of God, or
from the body" (no. 178).
"There are various kinds of spirits. The one Spirit which is
that of Christ, is the only one that has all blessedness with it; by
other spirits man is enticed in a thousand ways to follow with them ;
but woe to those who do so It is necessary, therefore, that
a distinction should be made among spirits ; which, however, cannot
be done except through Christ Himself and His Spirit" (no. 179).
"Our whole will into which we are born, and which is ruled by
the body and introduces thought, is opposed to the Spirit, which
conveys to us God’s grace and mercy ; wherefore there is a continual
strife, and we can by no manner of means unite ourselves with the
Spirit which by grace is with us ; and hence it is that we are dead
for everything which is good, but for everything evil we are inclined
from ourselves" (no. 64).
"If we have God’s Spirit and life, then we have a daily victory ;
but if we have it not, it is a daily defeat. We fall from one defeat
into another" (no. 188).
"When any one receives chastisement from the Lord, he is gifted
afterwards with a greater zeal, and more spirit, in going on with
that to which he is led by the Spirit; so that chastisement and
punishment augment the same" (no. 193).

by Swedenborg up to 1745, is thus stated by him in the Adversaria :
"Lest the whole human race should perish, and that some seed
might be vindicated for heaven, the Only Begotten of God, who on
account of being the Word, is also the Creator of the human race,
out of pure love, because from Himself, and thus out of pure grace,
resolved Alone to fulfil the Divine Justice, or to become Justice
or Righteousness ; wherefore He offered Himself as a sacrifice, first
in [the person of] Abel, and afterwards in accordance with prophecy
in his own body; and hence, Justice being fulfilled, and Jehovah,
the Father, having been appeased, a new stock was raised up for
Adam, or a new seed for the woman, from which sprang the Messiah,
the Saviour of the world" (Vol. I, no. 98, p. 76). Again we read,
"By the intended sacrifice of Isaac was prefigured that the Messiah,
the Only begotten Son of God, the Only Love of His Father
Jehovah, would be a sacrifice for the whole world, so that all might
be justified through faith in Him" (Vol. I, no. 266, p. 201 ). Further,
"No one can satisfy Divine Justice except He who is God ; nor
