1120 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
that passage no. 3 seems to have been written about the
middle of February, 1746, thus making actually ten months
since his spiritual sight had been opened. This passage also
fixes the date of the opening as
4. "This experience has now continued for nine or ten
months" (Ibid. II , no. 135).
In reality this experience had continued for ten or eleven
months (see no. 3), dating from
5. "By the Divine mercy of God-Messiah heaven has been
open to me now for almost a whole year, so that I could
converse with the inhabitants of heaven, and gather thence
experience in spiritual things" (Ibid. II, no. 1285).
This was written about the end of March, 1746, thus fixing
the year when heaven was opened to him as
6. "By daily experience which has now lasted about a year,
I could not help learning and acknowledging, that I cannot
utter a single word but what is permitted by God-Messiah”
(
Ibid. II, no. 1684).
This was written about the middle of April, 1746, as is
proved by no. 2 ; dating his spiritual experience from .
7. In no. 1957 (Adversaria, II) we read, "Once there ap
peared to me frogs of various sizes; and, indeed, so manifestly,
that I could see them creeping before my eyes. Soon, however,
they were collected into one body, when they became like
fire, and burst with a noise, which reached my ears with a
crackling sound, when the place was purified. This happened
in London in the month of April, 1745. Something like
smoke issued from my pores, but on the floor there was an
appearance of a large number of worms creeping about."
By reading this passage in connection with no. 2, and with
no. 15 of Document 5 (Vol. I), the date of Swedenborg’s
manifest admission into the spiritual world is not only fixed
in the middle of April, 1745, but the reader is also made
acquainted with all the concomitant circumstances of this event.
The testimony of this passage also goes for
8. "Great care must be taken not to entertain in thought
profane and cursed things ; for these then infest the thought
of the mind ... I can solemnly attest that such has been my
experience during the space of a year" (Adversaria, III,
no. 1129, p. 173). This passage likewise yields the date of . 1745.
9. "For fifteen months I have been in continual conver
sation [with spirits] speaking with them as a man with a man”
(Adversaria, III, no. 3102).
