mind, which are those of my spirit, so that I may see those
things which are in the spiritual world, and hear those who
are there, as I have indeed now done for twenty-two years
(See Swedenborg’s first letter to Prelate Etinger, written
September 23, 1766, Document 229, p. 249) . .

years .... Heaven was opened to me in 1744" (See Sweden

III. After 1766 to the end of his natural life Swedenborg
uniformly declared 1743 to be the date when the Lord opened
the interiors of his mind:

29. "The Lord has opened the interiors of my mind now
for twenty-five years" (C. L. 1).

This work, as published in 1768, is the epitome of a larger
work written by the author on the same subject (see Docu
ment 313, p. 1003) ; and we must assume that the shorter
treatise was prepared from the larger in the same year in
which it was printed ; otherwise we do not obtain 1743,
but 1742 . •
30. "I observed the influx from the spiritual world in a
perceptible and sensible manner continuously for twenty-five
years" (C. L. 419)
31. "The Lord Himself most mercifully appeared before
me, His servant, in the year 1743; when He opened my sight
into the spiritual world, and enabled me to converse with
spirits and angels" (Swedenborg’s letter to Dr. Hartley, written
in 1769, Document 2) .

As Swedenborg states in no. 791, that he finished this
work on June 19, 1770, it follows that the first part of it
was written in 1769, and the rest in 1770 ; which in both
cases yields
