A SWEDISH HYMN. 1127
of the passages of Section II where he speaks of his mental state
in 1744, as for instance in no. 23, he says that "he had daily inter
course with angels and departed men;" yet his real state then is
perhaps best expressed in no. 24, where we read that he then
"perceived the influx from the spiritual world in a perceptible and
sensible manner;" and the precise mode in which he then "perceived
the influx from the spiritual world," is described clearly in the
"Spiritual Diary," no. 192, where we read under the date of August 31,
1747, "For nearly three years [from about the middle of 1744]
I have been allowed to perceive and notice the operation of spirits,
not by a sort of internal sight, but by a sensation which is associated
with a sort of obscure sight, whereby I noticed their presence,
which was various, their approach and departure, besides many
other things."
The third decided step in the opening of Swedenborg’s spiritual
sight took place in the middle of April, 1745 (see no. 2 of the
present number), when the Lord again appeared to him, and in
deed in the form which Swedenborg described to Messrs. Robsahm
and Beyer (see Document 5, no. 15, and Document 6, no. 32), and
when the Lord introduced him into the spiritual world in such a
manner that, as we read in no. 9 of the present Note, he was able
to speak with spirits "as a man with a man."
A fourth and final change in the opening of his interiors took
place on August 7, old style, 1747 ; under which date he states, that
"there was a change of state in him into the celestial kingdom, in
an image" (mutatio status in me, in cœleste regnum, in imagine,”
see Document 313, Codex 6, no. 3). In this state Swedenborg
wrote those of his theological works which he published as the
servant of the Lord Jesus Christ."
NOTE 169.
TRANSLATION OF A SWEDISH HYMN.
In nos. 18, 28, and 31 of Document 209 Swedenborg mentions
a Swedish hymn : Jesus är min wän then beste, which we communi.
cate here in the English translation published by Mr. Richard M’Cully
in his "Swedenborg Studies," p. 37 :
Jesus is my best of friends,
None like Him ’mongst mortals born;
And shall I, whom He defends,
Join the world- His goodness scorn?
