COUNT EHRENPREUS. 1129
NOTE 171.
AMBASSADOR PREIS.
Joachim Frederic Preis, the son of Prof. Preis of the university
of Dorpat, was born in 1667. He became connected with the Swedish
embassy at the Hague as early as 1695, and in 1713 was secretary
of Ambassador Palmqvist, Swedenborg’s early patron (see Note 61),
at whose house he no doubt made the acquaintance of the young
Swedenborg. In 1725, Preis became Ambassador Extraordinary at
the Hague, a post which he filled for a great number of years. In
1756 he was created a baron, and he died in 1759 in his ninety
second year at the Hague.
NOTE 172.
PROFESSOR WINBOM.
Anders Winbom was professor of theology at Upsal, where he
was a great favorite with the students. Gezelius’ "Biografiskt Lexicon"
for 1788 says concerning him: "It was an especial delight for him
to toil and labour for others. He displayed an uncommon zeal and
interest in instructing the youth of his country; wherefore he was
universally respected and loved. His former pupils, who are occupy
ing now [ 1788] places of honour, still speak of him with enthusiasm,
as of a Swedish Gellert. He had the gift of making his subject
interesting; he lectured with zeal, had fluency of speech, was ready
with illustrations, and convinced his hearers. The result was that
his lecture-room was always crowded, and that the number of his
hearers was so great that they had to struggle for places. Winbom
was born in 1687 ; he passed through the gymnasium at Skara,
while it was under the superintendence of Bishop Swedberg. He
had to struggle much with disease in his youth. In 1731 he was
appointed professor at Upsal, and died in 1745.
NOTE 173.
COUNT CARL EHRENPREUS.
Concerning Count Carl Diedric Ehrenpreus Dr. Kahl 217 says in his
Narratiunculæ, "He was a count, a senator, a knight, chancellor of
the university at Upsal, and was born in 1692.
of Charles XII he was sent to Bender in the
