1158 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
Som lefvande har talt med döda:
Hans Minne näpplig glömskan bryr,
Dess Namn med Tidens wingar följer,
War SWEDENBORG ej Ryktet döljer,
Det ej för Afvunds tadel skyr.
(Thou man of wisdom, mighty spirit!
In age advanced, in honours rich.
Thy life was quiet, modest, right,
In earthly broils thou didst not meddle.
The wonder of the learned didst excite,
The ignorant and silly didst provoke.
Thou hast in visions truth revealed,
The light displayed which heaven benign has showed thee.
Thy life of many years and many cares

The wings of time his name shall bear ;
Our Swedenborg, in glory bright,
The shades of envy cannot reach.

professorship, and entered into the service of the church. From
1753 to 1777 he was pastor in var ous churches in Stockholm and
at last in the "Stor-kyrkan" or cathedral. In 1777 he was elected
bishop of Scania, and pro-chancellor of the University of Lund.
Celsius is best known by his History of Gustavus I, which appeared
in 1746 and 1753, his history of King Erik XIV, which was published
in 1774; and his Church History of Sweden, of which, however, only
one volume appeared in 1767. Besides this he wrote an epic
