and metaphysics in Upsal University. In 1751 , however, he was
ordained, and in the following year was made a doctor of divinity.
In 1756 he was appointed professor of theology, and in this new
capacity acquired as much honour as in the former. In 1764 he was
suddenly attacked by a severe fever, and departed this life two weeks
before Gjörwell asked Swedenborg about his condition in the other
world. He published a number of philosophical and theological
writings.
NOTE 210.
EPITAPH ON SWEDENBORG.
A copy of the following epitaph, which was printed in Stockholm
after Swedenborg’s death, was kindly presented to the editor of
these Documents by Prof. Nils Adolf Erik Nordensköld, of the
Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the celebrated North Pole ex
plorer; as appears from Document 252, A (p. 410), it was composed
by General Tuxen: 210
TO THE MEMORY
OF THE LATE EMANUEL SWEDENBORG, THE WELL-BORN
ASSESSOR,
WHO DIED IN LONDON, ON MARCH 29, 1772.
Svedenborg ferme et tranquille, à lui même rendu,
Alla chercher au Ciel le prix de la vertu.
(Firm and tranquil, self-composed, Swedenborg went to seek in
heaven the prize of virtue).
Du Wittre Man, Du starcka Anda
Af Ålder och af Ära mätt,
Du lefde stilla, Ärbart, Rätt,
Och Dig i jordiskt gräl ej blanda.
Du, som de Lärdas undran wäckt!
Och äfven dumhets hopen retat,
Du, som i syner sanning letat
Och fölgd det ljus Dig Himlen räckt.
Din Höga lifstid, myckna möda,
Du til wår saknad slutat har.
En Man så djupsint och så Rar,
