known to you. Will you do nothing in order to know also their
interior? It is in your interest therefore to contribute to the success
of my plan.""
C. F. Nordensköld wrote to Dr. Im. Tafel on May 2, 1822,
among other things, "When I undertook in 1783 a journey to London
at my own expense, the society for the spread of the new light was
then very small, and consisted only of ten or twelve persons. Mr.
Chastanier, a physician and apothecary, and a Frenchman by birth,
inserted an announcement in one of the papers to this effect, ’All
those who read the theological writings of Swedenborg and know
their value, will please to assemble in No. [62 ] of [Tottenham-Court
Road].’ In this immense town there were only three or four persons
who reported themselves ; whether there were only so few, or whether
only these had read the advertisement, is not known. I arrived a
few weeks after this announcement and found there eight persons.
Among these was Mr. Peckitt,229 about sixty-three years old, who
had been a physician and apothecary, a man without children [see
Note 229], and rich enough to live on the interest of his money ;
Wm. Spence, physician and apothecary, an extremely honest and
benevolent gentleman, although his means were limited." *
Among the French works published under the editorship of
Chastanier, are the following: (1) "The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly
Doctrine," London, 1782 ; it contains a dedication to the King of
France, and an address to the Clergy of France. (2) A French
translation of the treatise on the "Intercourse between the Soul
and the Body," London, 1785; it contains an address by the trans
lator to the universities of his native country, and a translation
of Mr. Hartley’s preface to his English translation of the same work:
at the close of the work he appended French translations of several
of Swedenborg’s letters, and a summary of the little treatise on "The
White Horse;" the volume closes with a prospectus for printing the
MSS. works of Swedenborg. In 1786 he published a work entitled:

3) Tableau analytique et raisonné de la Doctrine Céleste de l’Église
de la Nouvelle Jérusalem (An analytical and rational summary of
the Heavenly Doctrine of the New Jerusalem Church). This
work is dedicated to the Archbishop of Paris. In the preface
he communicates the results of his investigation into the charge
of insanity raised against Swedenborg by Mathesius and J. Wesley;
these results are contained in Document 270, p . 609. The
work closes with a French translation of Shearsmith’s affidavit
before the Lord Mayor of London respecting Swedenborg’s death,
