In 1787, finally, Chastanier published (4) his Journal Novi-Jéru
salémite, the first number of which contains a French translation of
the "Doctrine of Life;" the second number that of the "Doctrine of
the Lord;" the third that of the "Last Judgment;" and the fourth
that of the "Continuation concerning the Last Judgment." In the
fourth number Chastanier promises to publish in monthly numbers the
treatise on "Conjugial Love," and the "True Christian Religion ;"
but these monthly numbers do not seem to have appeared. Chastanier
also, as appears from Document 309 (p. 808), was appointed an
associate-editor of the Apocalypsis Explicata.
In 1790 Chastanier made a public avowal of his belief in the
Doctrines of the New Church, in the columns of the "New Jerusalem
Magazine" (p. 112), where he says among other things, "Having by
the greatly signalized blessings of the God of all mercies towards
a poor undeserving mortal, been one of the first here in London,
who fully accepted the message of Emanuel Swedenborg, I make no
sort of scruple or the least hesitation to authorise you, in full length
to publish my name, as one of the greatest admirers of all and every
particular doctrine therein contained, and would to God I could
in all justice add also-one of the strictest followers of these doctrines
of immortal truth. But short as ever I may come in this respect,
the God who inspired him with all these heavenly doctrines, even
the blessed Jehovah Jesus, the only God of all things, knoweth
however, that it has ever been, since the happy moment in which
these writings fell into my hands, the very wish of my innermost
soul, to frame the rest of my life upon the truly beautiful pattern
of the true Christian." In the same letter Chastanier also stated
that for twenty-six years he had been an inhabitant of Great Britain,
showing that he emigrated to England in 1774.
In the same magazine (p. 226) Chastanier furnishes some ad
ditional testimony respecting the last moments of Swedenborg, which
is contained in Document 269, pp. 578 et seq.
About this time Chastanier made an exhaustive study of that
portion of the "Spiritual Diary" which Wadström brought to England
in 1788. He translated portions of it from the Latin, and took a
faithful copy of the Latin original, which was of great assistance to
Dr. Im. Tafel, when he began the publication of the original text
in 1843. The fate of the MS. of the "Spiritual Diary," which
Wadström left in his hands, is related in Document 309,
pp. 811-813.
About this time the French revolution broke out, and after the
political atmosphere had become cleared, Chastanier resolved to
