tions of the knee-joint, in sciatica, and also for the general
circulation.
Extension of the Muscles of the Calf.
If, standmg with the legs straight, we make strong dorsi-flexion
of the foot, the muscles of the calf are extended, and the move-
ment goes on until it is stopped, partly by the wedging of the
astragalus between the malleoli, and partly by the band action of
Fig. 58.
the muscles of the calf. We can increase the intensity of this
movement by placing the foot against, say, a wall at an angle of
45 deg., or on something situated at the same angle, and^’then
with straight knee moving the whole body forwards (fig. 58).
The extension is felt very strongly in the muscles of the call
If the knee is bent, the movement loses its effect, because the
