Nederlandene.
Herredømme over Søen.

Saga, I, S. 117—120.
Statsmand, Philip Meadowe. Friesendorf var svensk Sendebud i London. Af dette
Dokument meddeles her følgende Brudstykke:

The Interest of ye English in ye Zound, as affaires now stand,
written ye 16. of May An. 1660.

———— But chiefly it concernes ye English to consider that ye
Hollanders doe very much labour to get Drontheim in Norway & the Island of Bornholm
in ye middle of the Baltic sea into their Hands: by wch they would not onely get
ye Materials for Shipping into their Hands and improve Drontheime so as to make
it lyke Holland besides ye securing of ye Greenland & the rest of the Northern
trade to themselves; & on contrary make ye English Trade in those parts more
hazardous and chargable, but alsoe would bee able to keepe their Fleets in
Drontheim and Bornholme, where they might lie at catche for all, that trade into the
North or into ye Baltic Sea & thereby hinder ye conjunction of England &
Sweden, though these two Kingdoms had never so much neede of it: all which the
English are much concerned to hinder & to reduce the Toll in ye Zound to what
it was anciently, wch was but a Rosenoble p. Mast: there being no Reason, that
Men should bee made to pay meerly for passing through A Streight, where they
come into no Haven, nor breake bulke, for by the same same reason England
might make all ships pay, that passe between Calais and Dover, which yet was
never atteimpted.

If the English should suffer ye Hollanders to become Masters of Drontheim,
there would thereby accrue to the Hollanders an incredible strength at sea, seeing
that Province alone by ye occasion of ye great Fishing, that is upon that coast,
is able to set forth in a short time some thousands of seamen, where of ye
English have to their coste had the proofe in ye war between ye Hollanders and them
at which time they had onely ye King of Denmarks leave to leavy seamen there:
and then we may easily guesse, what is to be expected, if ye Hollanders should
come to bee wholy Masters there and make it the Staple of ye Northern Trade,
because of its convenient situation for ye Fishing and Land Trade.

Not to speake of ye necessity, that all ye shipps, which trade to Greeneland
or northwards or into ye Baltick Sea, will bee put to, there not beeing place for
them to anchor in, except where the Hollanders by these means will bee Masters.
