German branch to which also the Anglo-Saxon belongs, shows a sy-
stem of conjugation perhaps unrivalled for admirable lucidness and strict
regularity. Its general outlines are as follows. There are two con-
jugations, the strong and the weak one. In a wider sense, as applied
also to the Classical languages, these terms infer that the former has
a power of joining its terminations immediately to the root, whereas
the latter requires a mediate vowel between them; as to the German
languages, and more especially the Gothic, the strong conjugation is
characterized by foriming its preterit tense, and often also its participle
past by a change of the vowel of the root = the German ablaut, and
the weak by adding for the said tenses a dental sound after the mediate
vowel. Both conjugations are then subdivided in several classes, the
strong one according to the series of changes which the vowel of the
root suffers, the weak one according to the nature of the mediate vowel.
The numeral and personal inflections of the strong conjugation äre
shown in the following scheme:
