wreathen still occur. The Anglo-Saxon slitan has entirely given up its
strong inflection, and become the weak slit.

Class V.

Most verbs belonging to this class have either become extinct, or
passed over to the weak conjugation; the few remaining ones show o,
long or short, for both the preterit and the participle. On the other
hand, a great many extraneous verbs, have joined this class, especially
out of class II, and on this account these also have another, though
now nearly obsolete preterit with a.

Bear -— bore born -— "bore
Break — broke broken — broke
Choose chose — chosen -— chose
Freeze froze — frozen — "froze
Get got -— gotten got —
Shear — shore sborn — ”shore
Speak — spoke spoken — "spoke
Steal — stole stolen — "stole

Weave — wove woven — Wove

Cleave , heave, and seethe, Anglo-Saxon cledfan, hebban, seodan,
rarely hove the strong forms clove, cloven, hove, hoven, sod, sodden,
bat usually inflect weakly. Oflvose and shoot, the only strong remnants
are the participles (for-)lorn and shotten. The distinction now gene-
rally made between bear, bare, born, parere, and bear, bore, borne,
ferre, is not organical, and quite unknown in the elder language. Fly,
Anglo-Saxon fleogan, has passed over to the weak class.

Class VI.
Only the first subdivision is still extant; the second, as was to be
expected, is lost. The vowel of the preterit is e, but in those origi-
nally ending with a v, this radical has changed the e to ev.
