en gång sett hvalross på land, nämligen omkring 300 stycken
på en sandstrand vid Hinlopen Island. Alla voro gamla,
stora oxar.»

Den förste, som beskrifvit och afbildat Stillahafs-hvalrossen,
är den berömde James Cook. 1 På hans plansch framställes
en hvalrosshjord, der man ser djuren i olika ställningar, så
väl uppe på isen som i vattnet. Betarne äro hos alla ganska
långa och smala, På hufvudfiguren, som är vänd åt åskådaren,
gå deras spetsar alldeles ihop. Så vidt jag vet, är G. Shaw 2
den förste naturforskare,, som jämfört Stillahafs-hvalrossen med
den från Atlantiska hafvet. Han kommer till den slutsatsen,
att de äro två olika varieteter. I anf. arbete sid. 236 säger
han: »It is easy, however to perceive a remarkable difference
between the tusks of this last (Stillahafs-formen), and those of
the former kind figured in Jonston, and it clearly appears, that
though this difference is not such as to justify our considering
them as two distinct species, yet it obliges us to remark them
as varieties; and it should seem, that in the regions, then
visited by captain Cook, viz. the icy coasts of the American
continent, in lat. 70, the Whalrus is found with tusks much
longer, thinner and far more sharp pointed, in proportion, than
the common Whalrus; and they have a slight inclination to a
subspiral twist: there is also a difference in the position of the
tusks of the two animals; those of the variety .figured in
captain Cook’s voyage curving inwards in such a manner as nearly
to meet at the points, while those of the former divaricate.
These differences appear very striking on collating different
heads of these animals. Something may however be allowed
to the different stages of growth as well as to the difference
of sex.» Af näst sista meningen synes framgå, att han haft
tillgång till exemplar af de båda olika formerna. Illiger 3
upptager Stillahafs-hvalrossen som skild art, livilken han kallar
Trichechus obesus, utan att gifva någon beskrifning på djuret.
