N. valida Cl. at Grun. (A. Diat. pag. 32, Pl. II, fig. 29)
Kara, Cape Wankarema.
In the latter locality N. valida occurs in a great profusion
of varieties, which are all asymmetric-, the strioe 011 one half of
the valve being more approximate to the median line tlian on
the other. The strise are always distinctly transversely lineate.
One variety minuta Cl. lias not alternately longer and shorter
striee in the middle. Strise 8 in 0,oi mm. Length of the valve 0,025
mm. Br. 0,013 mm. Typical specimens have the length 0,os mm.,
the breadth 0,023 mm. and 8 striae, which in the middle are
alternately longer and shorter. One variety is 0,n mm. in length and
0,026 mm. in breadth, lias 8 striae in 0,oi 111111., scarcely
alternately longer and shorter in the middle, and is verv
asymmetric. It comes near to N. dis/avs var. bomdis Grun, but has more
dense strice. It approaches also lig. 17 and 18 in A. Schm. Atl.
Pl. XLVI, which, however, are not distinctly asymmetric.
N. imperfecta Cl. — Broadly oval, 0,065 mm. in length and
0,03 111111. in breadth. Struc coarse, minutely transversely lincate,
011 one half of the valve more approximate to the med. line
than 011 the other, shortened around the central nodule, 8 in 0,oi
mm., interrupted. — Pl. 36, fig. 34. — Kara, Cape Wankarema.
This form comes near to N. valida, but differs in its striae,
which are much less distinctly transversely lineate and many
times interrupted, so that tliey seem to be composed of fragments.

man 011 the ice of Cape Wankarema occurs an almost
incred-ible profusion of varieties and forms, all connected witli each
other and more or less akin to N. directa. Many of these

forms are very different to the outline, number of strias
which are entire or more or less interrupted, always distinctly
transversely lineate. Manv of these forms are distinctly asym-
