In order with certainty to decide if one of the above-mentioned
spec-ies may he identical with one described before, typical
specimens are, at least in most cases, required for comparison.
Only when specimens of these three genera have been the
ob-jects of a very careful and minute examination in the hand of
an able spongiologist, there can be any possibility of explaining
these genera. Before this is done I shall give new specific
names to some of the forms.

Genus Cribrochalina 0. S.

Cribrochalina variabilis Vosmeer.

Plate 26, fig. 4.

Cribrochalina variabilis, V o sm ser, Eeport on the Sponges dredged up in

the Arctic Sea by the »Willem Barents» in the
years 1878 and 1879 (in Niederl. Archiv fur Zool.,
Supplementb. J, 1882, pag. 30, Plate 1, fig. 16—17,
Plate 3, fig. 67—69, and Plate 4, fig. 145—147).

This species is represented by several fine and large
specimens, much varying in size and shape. Most of them
re-semble those which are figured by Yo s m as r. I have not
separated ali the forms as distinet varieties, because I have
found in our collection many transitions between the two
varieties, described by VoSinger. Ali the specimens are in a
very good condition and preserved in spirit. Colour greyish.
The sponge is generally infundibuliform; I have seen only
one specimen which was compressed, cake-like and deprived
of the stem. The oscula are congregated in the upper
con-caved part of the infundibulum. There is no difference in
colour between the pediele or stem and the body. Some
specimens are cylindrical, the diameter of the body of the sponge
often not much greater than that of the stem. The spicules
agree well with those described and figured by Vosmger.
Most specimens are attached to stones and other hard objects.
The largest specimen is infundibuliform, 80 nnn in height, and
90 mm in diameter at tlie margin of the funnel. The cvlindiical
specimens have a diameter of about 5 mm. The consistency is
very soft and flexible.

Habitat. Between Stolbovoi-island and Liakov-island, depth
12 fathoms (51 V.); S. E. from Liakov-island, depth 8—9 fath.
