thus be included within the limits of the arctic region, but
this seems to do but little harm, as is shown by the diagram
of the geographical distribution of the species given below.
The notices about arctic and antarctic Hyperids are very
scarce in the rich literature concerning the amphipodous
Crustacea. The first Hyperid mentioned from the arctic
region is H. Ström’s1 »Pidex cancriformis antennis brevissimis»
from the western coast of Norway (1762); some years later
(1776) it was named Gammarus medusarum by O. F. Muller2
(= Hyperia medusarum O. F. Miiller, p. 560). Subsequent
authors have until very lately confounded it with allied
species as will be seen by the synonomical list pag. 560, and it
appears in the literature under different names as Talitrus
Cyaneae Sabine3, Hyperia spinipes A. Boeck, a. o. The next
Hyperid mentioned is one of the most characteristic of the
arctic region, Euthemisto libellula, observed and described by
M. W. M andt 4 (1822) from the west coast of Greenland under
the name of Gammarus libellula. The first truly zoo-geographical
contribution including the tribe in question was given in the
year 1838 by Henrik Kröyer5. He enumerated the folio wing
species of Hyperids from the seas off Greenland:
Metoecus medusarum Kr. (= Hyper oche Kroeyeri p. 564).
Tinemisto arctica Kr. (= Euthemisto libellula ? p. 569).
Themisto crassicornis Kr. (= » » young P- 569).
Lestrigonus exulans Kr. (= Hyperia galba p. 562).
Hyperia oblivia Kr. (= Parathemisto oblivia p. 567).
H. Milne-Edwards mentions in his classical work
»His-toire naturelle des Crustacés» (1840) the same Hyperids from
the arctic region as Kröyer, and from the antarctic region:
Themisto Gaudichaudii Guérin (= Euthemisto Gaudichaudi p. 568).
