Hyperiidea.» Bihang till K.

Svenska Vet.-Akad. Handl..

Band 11, N:0 16, p. 16.

According to tlie very short and imperfect deseriptions of
the earlier authors this species has been confounded with
//. g alba, H. Latreillei, IL oblivia and others, or else, being
con-sidered as a new species, it has got new names as Talitrus cyanece
Sabine, Hyperia Lesueurii Lat reille, H. spinipes Boeck. In
my opinion it is evident that no animal but that here
de-scribed can be identified with the Pulex cancriformis antennis
brevissimis Strom, as the characteristic quoted by him, 1. c.,
p. 189: »De to forste Par Fodder ere lodne eller flossede, i
Enden stumpede» agrees well with this animal, but not with
the other Hyperige. The animal described by O. Fabricius
in his »Fauna groenlandica» under the name Oniscus medusarum
is another species, possibly identical with Hyperoche Kroeyeri
or H. abyssorum (see below p. 564). The examination of the
description and drawing of Talitrus cyanece. given by Sabine
(1. c., p. 134 , pl. 1) has convinced me that a true Hyperia
medusarum has been the type of his new species. The
Hyperia cyanece of Spence Bate1 is not the same species as
Sabine’s, but synonymous with Euthemisto NordensJäöldi (see
below p. 570), probably his typical specimen has been
preserved in the same phial as the original of Sabine, because
he refers to the original label of Sabine.

The diagnostical points of this species are the not produced
carpi of the first pair of pereiopoda, the scarcely serrated, densely
hirsute metacarpi and small dactyli of the first two pairs, and
the length of these pairs in comparison with the two following.
In general habitus it comes very near to H. Latreillei.

Length 10—13 mm.

Hab. Coasts of Greenland and Spitzbergen, West-coast of
Norway. (S. M., D. M.)

2. Hyperia Latreillei, H. Miln e-Edwards, 1830.

Pl. 42, fig. 34—39; Pl. 43, fig. 40—46.

Syn. 1S30. Hyperia Latreillei. H. Milne-Edwards. »Extrait de Recherches

pour servir å 1’Histoire
naturelle des Crustacés

1 Catalogue of the specimens of Amphipodous Crustacea in the collection
of the British Museum, p. 294, pl. 48, fig. 10.
