like Windows hostile faces peered curiously down at
the procession below; on, under these low arclies
and passageways spänning the streets; on, through
those ponderous gates vomiting the crowded on to
Bethany
the Damascus road outside the city walls. How
familiar to these streets was this frenzy of
shout-ing! .
Already the evening shadows were descending
upon the streets of Jerusalem, and, following at a
distance, I watched this stränge procession on its
way toward the Wailing Place; now hidden from
sight by an angle in the wall, now emerging into
the slanting rays of golden sunlight, then passing
into the obscurity of deep shadows, and then again
hidden by a sudden tum in the way.
