VERY Christian church is more or less
al-truistic, i.e. recognizing the duty laid upon
us to help those who are less fortunate than
we, Sometimes we hear, of course, the cry
of our detractors that the Church is dead
and is not doing anything to ameliorate
the suffering, poverty and distress in the world.
But the most superficial investigation will reveal,
how baseless such accusations are and that the
Christian Churcn is the mother of nearly all the
benevolent activities in the world.
The Swedish braneh of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, both here and in Sweden, has for years
recognized this Christian duty and spent large sums
for benevolent institutions, and it is a pleasure
to me to call the attention to some of the monu-
