I hegin then with t’he Bethany Home, whose
humble servant I happen to be, as that it is the
oldest Home of its kind among us. The first thought
of budding such an institution orginated with Mrs.
C. M. Lindgren, mother of Mr. J. R. Lindgren,
who asked her son to set apart a certain sum of
money for this purpose. In 1889 he took Rev.
Alfr. Anderson into his confidence and promised to
donate the sum of $10,000 on the condition that
Anderson would raise an equal amount within the
church. Pastor Anderson brought the matter up
at a district meeting in Donovan and received the
sanction of all the ministers for the plan, after
which the sum was quickly subscribed. Subsequently
Mr. Lindgren gave another $10,000 on the same
condition which was also met. Por some time the
Home carried on its work in rented houses until
1892, when more than half a block of land was
bought in Ravenswood for $13,000 and the first
budding erected at the cost of about $30,000, with
accommodation for 35 persons. The space was soon
too insufficient for the number of applicants who
desired to be taken in, making an addition necessary
which was dedicated in May 1920 with an added
capacity of 80 beds, besides large sunparlors and
ampie room for Utility purposes. This for a cost
