Og hvilket sandt Opsving paa Vinger af mandlig Styrke
ikke i disse Linjer om Norge? o:
er der
Be freedom her’s! be freedom all her own!
The beams of freedom gild her mountains crest,
the beams of freedom warm her natives breast,
and blest with freedom, tvill her sons be blest!
Then shall the rude Atlantics utmost tide
the coasts of freedom lave on either side
from that fair land b’neath sable Labrador
to rugged Norways rude and arctic shore". 1
I det engelske Blad the Star" for 17de Mai viste sig
følgende Poesi:
ogsaa
Norwegia to Britain.
Lov’st thou thy freedom? —by her holy shrine,
if yet one drop of British blood be thine,
o Britain! I conjure thee — spare the brave!
nor join the crew, that would my realms enslave!
Blast not the laurel, which thy fathers wore,
by foul invasion of my Norway’s shore,
whose hardy sons, like those on Runnymede,*
for Freedom pant, and dåre, like them, to bleed!
O! let not history stain her honest page,
bright wiih the triumphs of the present age,
with the sad tale, that Britain drew her sword
to bend Norwegians to a foreign Lord;
that she, who fought, all Europe’s realms to free,
uplifts her arm — to murder liberty;
and aims her steel to stab her in the cell,
where still she designs amid wild woods to dwell,
beneath the snow-clad pines and mountains shade,
for Nature’s free-born sons by nature made.
1 Lad Frihed ene, Frihed være dets!
Dens Straaleglands forgylde Norges Fjeld
og varmt opflamme hver en Normands Sjel I
Har Norge Frihed, har dets Sønner Held.
Da skal atlantisk Bølgegang med Lyst
paa begge Sider Friheds stolte Kyst
ombruse, rullende fra Labrador
til Friheds faste Klippekyst i Nord."
(Jæger.)
2 Englands Eidsvold, hvor Magna Charta blev givet. I Nærheden af Windsor.
