BY-PRODUCTS IN THE SULPHITE- AND
SULPHATE WOOD PULP INDUSTRIES
A. SULPHITE SPIRIT
f I ^HE Swedish Sulphite Spirit Industry is one of comparatively fresh date, for it
L was on the 24:th may 1909, at the Skutskär Works of the Stora Kopparbergs
Bergslags A.-B., that the manufacture proper of sulphite spirit began in Sweden. It
may be worth while to mention that this factory was also the first sulphite spirit
works in the whole world. The development of this industry has, however, been
exceedingly rapid, and at present this country possesses 22 works, built and equipped,
which, when running full time, can produce about 20 millions litres (5,000,000 gallons)
95 % sulphite spirit.
Sulphite spirit is obtained by the fermentation of a kind of saccharine matter (cellulose
sugar) contained in the residual lye in the sulphite wood pulp industry. Sulphite spirit,
therefore, is produced by a method analogous to that employed in the manufacture of
spirit obtained from potatoes and grain. It is ethylalcohol, with the chemical formula
C2 Ids OH. Sulphite spirit must, consequently, be carefully distinguished from wood
spirit which is methylalcohol, with the chemical formula CH3 OH.
The characteristics of Swedish Sulphite Spirit are:
1. Odour inconsiderably raw.
2. Clear on dilution.
3. Reaction with litmus: 0.3 cc n/lONa OH/100 cc.
4. Aldehyde % =0.09 gr per 100 cc.
5. Uffelmanu’s test for higher alcohols gives a slight resin-like residue, without any
fusel smell.
6. Sulphur % = 0.0004 gr S. per 100 cc.
7. Acetic Ether: 0.02 gr ethyl-acetate per 100 cc.
8. Dry substance: 0.03 per litre.
9. Residue after heating: 0.004 gr per litre.
Merely slight traces of methyl alcohol.
