WOOD DISTILLATION PRODUCTS

EVEN many hundred years ago, the manufacture in Sweden of the most important
| production of wood distillation, “Peasant made wood-tar” or Stockholm tar, as it
was called, formed a very considerable branch of industry. Such tar is still produced
in large quantities, and is still of the same desirable quality as in olden days.

The production of other wood distillation products, on the other hand, is an
industry of comparatively late date. Among these may be reckoned: kiln-tar,
wood-tar-oil, wood-tar pitch, turpentine (in the form of both sulphate- and kiln turpentine,
mostly refined), acetate of lime, wood spirit, etc. It has been only during the last two
decades, after the introduction of more scientific methods of manufacture, that there
has arisen any great demand for these productions, but the Swedish makes of these
articles have now become a steadily inci’easing factor of importance in the international
market. During the period 1909—1917 the manufacture in Sweden of wood
distillation products has risen from 5,756 tons to 17,942 tons, the value, during the same time,
having increased more than twenty fold. The foremost place is occupied by wood-tar
and wood-tar-oil, but the production of turpentine oil, too, show’s a considerable
increase, viz., from not quite 500 tons to more than 2,000.

The following table gives Sweden’s export of wood-tar and wood-tar water,
turpentine oil, wood spirit and acetate of lime for the year 1913:
