During the years 1919 and 1920, the manufacture of wood distillation products

has increased very greatly, in consequence of the establishment of many new factories
and of the extension of old works. This, of course, will be of great importance for
the exports when the international market finally becomes stable. The almost total
cessation of such production in Russia and Austria-Hungary, which has been one result
of the Great War, will re-act on the international market in such a way that there
will certainly arise a greatly increased demand in other countries for Swedish wood
distillation products.

In order to maintain the high qualitative character of these products, and to
standardize the manufacture as far as possible, the greater number of the Swedish
producers have combined to form the “Association of Swedish Wood Distilleries”,
one of the tasks of which is to carry out the sale of the products of the various
members of the association. The various factories affiliated to the Association have, at
present, a total manufacturing capacity of about 10,000 tons wood-tar, 1,000 tons raw
turpentiue and 2,000 tons acetate of lime.

The Association, which also deals in the “Peasant-made” mark of tar, has made it
one of its aims to get its members to produce as uniform qualities as possible of the
various manufactures. In consequence of this, there are produced and sold through
the Association (v. the advertisement n:o 144) goods with the following standard marks:

Retort wood-tar................................ mark T. S. T., Retort.

l:a Kiln wood-tar............................ ,, T. A., Kiln.

Second „ „ „.............................................. „ T. B., Kiln & T. C., Kiln.

Peasant-made Wood-tar (Stockholm-tar) ,, T. D. T., Umeå & T. D. T, Luleå.

l:a Wood tar-oils ........................... ,, T. D. A., Wood.

Second „ „ ,,............................................ ,, T. R. A., Wood.

l:a Wood tar-pitch........................... „ T. T. B., Retort & T. A. B., Kiln.

Second „ „ ,, ................... ,, T. B. B., Kiln.

Retort raw Turpentine........................ ,, T. S. R., Retort.

Kiln ,, „ ................... „ T. R., Kiln.

l:a pure Turpentine.......................... „ T. A. T., Retort & T. A. B. T., Kiln.

Wood Alcohol, raw ........................... „ T. T. S., Kiln.

Acetate of Lime.............................. „ T. K., Kiln & T. K. B., Kiln.

All the barrels or other packing are stamped with the Association’s registered
Trade-mark “DEYE”, and with a special mark for Kiln and Retort products, a step
the Association has considered necessary in order to prevent all such mistakes as are
made all too often with regard to quality, especially in the export market.

Great importance, too, has been attached to the question of packing, and, as a
large number of the members are owners of barrel-making works, the Association is
well equipped to meet all demands for special packing in wood for long distance
transport. The Association is also able to supply distillation products in iron drums
and barrels of any desired size.
