Résumé.
It goes without saying that a class of immigrants
so intelligent and wide-awake as the Swedes soon
would find a growing need of the products of the
printing press. Before 1860 their publications were
few and of a crude and primitive nature. But after
that year they grew rapidly in number and influence.
Today there are published in the Swedish language
about 150 newspapers, including monthly and
quarterly magazines. Their bookpresses have sent out
a large number of religious and poetical works, and
in later years some notable works in History,
Philosophy, Fiction and Art, etc., have appeared. It is
the aim of the Swedish Historical Society of America
to collect and preserve these monuments of the
intellectual and spiritual life of the Swedish
immigrants.
