The German-American Historical Society
of Illinois.

Why was the German-American Historical Society
of Illinois organized? For the same reason, that
called into life yours, the Swedish-American
Historical Society. Neither of them would have any reason
to exist, were it not for the persistent effort in public
print and speech, to claim an English origin for
whatever of lasting good has been done in this
country and is worth to be hoklen up as an example
to future generations; and for the incessant
endeavor to proclaim as Anglo-Saxons the whole white
population of these United States.
The overwhelming larger share of the Germans,
the Swiss, the Scandinavians, the Dutch or Flemish
in the building and forming of this American nation
is either entirely ignored or studiously perverted
into Anglo-Saxon merit and virtue.
To set this right before posterity is the purpose
and object of such historical societies as yours and
ours. We deem it not only a right, but a duty to
our predecessors as well as to our descendants to
assert and prove by unimpeachable evidence, that
up to the end of the nineteenth century this country
was populated and cultivated not only by
Anglo-Saxons, but to a vastly greater extent by the
Teutonic races of continental Europe—the Germans, the
