L. P, Esbjörn, 1849, Of these Oosselman,
Arfweds-son and Unonius returned to Sweden, and all three
published interesting books about America.
Among those who arrived in the forties is one,
who appears to he all but forgotten; and yet he, as
an educator, historian and politician, played no mean
part and was a highly educated and versatile man.
This was Judge Gustaf Clemens Ilebbe, who was
born at Stockholm June 24, 1804. The family had
originally lived in Transylvania but on account of
its devotion to the Lutheran faith, had been
compelled to emigrate. In the sixteenth century they
settled in Pomerania, and the founder of the
Scandinavian branch of the family came to Sweden in 1710.
The subject of this sketch, whose parents were
Johan Gustaf Hebbe, director of the naval college at
Stockholm, and his wife Elisabet Bcata Tomalini,
was educated in his native city and at the university
of Upsala. He was graduated in 182(j, and four
years later he took the degree of Bachelor of Laws.
After serving on the bench a short time, he tried his
hand at agriculture, but was unsuccessful; and on
account of untoward circumstances he was compelled
to leave the country in 1839. He then went to
England, where he soon commanded the attention of the
reading public by the able political articles lie
contributed to the London newspapers. The London
“Times” secured his services and sent him to the
Persian capital Teheran as its correspondent.
During the year 1845 he travelled extensively through
several European and Asiatic countries as
correspondent for “The New World,” a journal published
