Benjamin. Not long after liis arrival in this country we
find him in Pennsylvania, and, as lieutenant of a
company of volunteers from that stale, lie took part
in the Mexican war, 1846-47. Towards the end of
the decade he was again back in Pennsylvania, and
be now devoted his energies to lecturing on history
in Philadelphia. Previous to this he had begun his
literary work. Partly in collaboration with Col.
Deming he had translated a number of Swedish
novels, and a little later lie began the publication, in
parts, of a comprehensive universal history, hi 1849
he was made professor in a college at Columbia,
S. C., and simultaneously was appointed political
agent in the United States by the Hungarian patriot
Louis Kossuth. During the presidential campaign in
1852 the Democratic party secured his services as
stumpspeaker, and, in recognition of his valuable
assistance in the election of Franklin Pierce as
president, he was appointed U. S. Consul at Aachen,
Germany. For some reason, presumably his connection
with Kossuth, the German government refused to
recognize Hebbe as consul, and lie then drifted to
Copenhagen and again engaged in literary work. So
far as is known, he never returned to America.

Hebbe was twice married. The first time, in 1832,
to the well-known Swedish author Vendela Åstrand;
the second, in 1865, to Ilortense Annetta Johnsrud,
daughter of a wealthy Norwegian farmer. He
afterwards lived in Norway, chiefly engaged in literary
work, until his death, which occurred on the 21st
day of March, 1893, at the ripe age of almost 89.
