Reminiscences of a trip to Pike’s Peak and
down the Rio Grande in the year 1859,
at the time of the Pikes Peak gold craze.
In the latter part of 1858 the news was spread
that gold had been discovered on Cherry Creek in
the neighborhood of Pike’s Peak, Colorado. It
created great excitement; in my neighborhood, in
and around Andover, as well as everywhere else.
So in the fall and winter of 1858 and 1859 several
of us talked of making up a party of gold seekers and
to start out in the spring. Rumors of new and better
gold finds were constantly set in circulation, and we
thought if there was golu, we might as well try to
get some as anybody else.
Some of us agreed to rig out and start in the
spring of 1859. We were seven of us that formed a
company in which we were to have everything in
common, each one furnishing an equal share toward
the equipment, such as oxen, mules and wagons, I
got a yoke of oxen from my father for my share (I
was than niiueteen years, going on twenty) and a
few dollars in money. T do not remember just what
amount, but it was not much. We were also to
furnish an equal amount of flour and salt pork,
enough to last for nine months, if T remember rightly.
Our outfit consisted of one wagon with one span of
mules and one wagon with two yokes of oxen.
Our wagons loaded and everything ready, we
started on our journey on Monday morning, May 9,
