impressions of Hebbe. This is George W. Bungay,
who, in liis work “Offhand Takings,” published in
New York in 1854, devotes some four pages to this
remarkable man and among other things says of him:
“Perhaps no man in this country is so thoroughly
familiar with ancient and modern history.” — —
“lu person, he is tall, well proportioned; has a fresh,
healthy face; dark hair; lofty forehead, dark,
dreamy eyes, which light up in conversation,” — ”He
is a profound philosopher, a deep thinker, a cogent
reasoncr, a caustic antagonist, and a never-tiring
student.”)
