to get a shot. At times we would come across
enormous herds 01 these animals that would cover hills
and valleys for great distances. These flocks must
have contained many thousands. The ground was
strewn with skill is and horns of deer, elks and
mountain sheep. These animals seldom die a natural
death. When old and feeble so that they are not
able to flee from the wild beasts, they are captured
and devoured by the mountain lion, the bear and
the wolf.

We had now entered North Park. The Platte
River here is a small creek, the head waters of that
stream. North Park is surrounded by an elevation
with Medicine Bow Mountain on the east. The river
ruts through an elevation of perhaps thirty to forty
feet. Here would be a splendid opportunity to make
a reservoir for irrigation, for the park contains many
square miles of ground. It may be that in ages past
this park was a lake. I have not seen such tall grass
anywhere as the grass that grows here. We even
saw flax grow here. In this park we followed the
foot hills of ihe Medicine Bow prospecting in every
rivulet coming from the mountains, but did not find
enough to pay working it. We were now getting
close to the southern elevation. We concluded to
stop there a day or two. In the evening we noticed
something white on top of the mountains. Some said
it was snow and some thought it was white sand.
In the morning we decided to investigate the matter.
After breakfast we made ready to go. There was
Andrew with his rifle, Eric, his brother, little Magnus
and myself. It was a fine, warm morning, so we did
not wear our coats. Taking our prospecting outfit
