along, vve started to climb the mountains, but it
proved to be a hard job. In places it was so steep
we had to pull ourselves up by means of the limbs
of trees, but we would not give up. About three
o’clock in the afternoon we came out in the clear
where nothing grows. We were now past the
timber line. We thought we would try to show our party
in camp where we were. We gathered a large pile
of dry cedars and set it on fire, so that they might
notice it, but thev did not. While we were up there

we noticed a cloud from (he west coming towards us.
As the cloud came nearer we could look over it anti
see the sun shine on it. It was a beautiful sight. It
touched the mountains and enfolded us in a dense
fog. It was so thick we could not see each other.
It made our clothing damp and we got chilled
through as we had only our shirts and overalls on.
Luckily the cloud was not very extensive and it
soon passed away. We started downward, but
darkness overtook us. Andrew shot a partridge and we
built a fire by a small brook, prepared our bird,
made some spruce tea and ate our supper and slept
there over night.
On our way down to this place I noticed a peculiar
streak of rock running lengthwise on the mountain
and elevated a few inches over the surface. Tt was
four to five feet wide and appeared different from
the general surface, being of a lighter color, I have
often, when thinking of it afterwards, thought that
perhaps it might be some valuable ore. Not far
from this streak we passed a large oblong rock rest-

mg on three smaller ones which held it clear over
’he surface, I think I would be able to find this
