particular spot yet, if i was to look for it. As soon
as day broke, we started down. Coining to the
foothills of the mountain, we noticed that there was frost
along some of the creeks. ! think this must have
been about the 15th of August. It was about ten
o’clock when we reached our camp. From this
camping’place we moved on across the park to the
southwest corner and here we had to look for a
pass if we were to continue further. Plans Molcnhofl:
got. on one of the mules and was to ride over the
elevation to see if our way was clear for further
advance. lie had not gone far when a large grizzly
bear rose up among the sage bushes in front of him.
They stopped and looked at each other a while and
as the bear would not give him the right of way, lie
thought he would ride down below the point of this
hill and pass him that way. But when he got down
below the hillside, there the bear rose up on his
hind legs as before. If it was the same one he did
not know. Nevertheless, as he was not prepared to
fight, having only a small revolver with him, he
concluded to retreat and come back to eamp. At the
same time two others of our party started out in a
different direction. They also came back reporting
that they had seen two bears. In the evening we
talked over the bear question and thought it would
not be out of the way to try to get one, as our lard
supply was geting quite low, We made preparations
to try our luck the following day. Among the
fourteen of us there were only four who had guns,
and among the four only one rifle. The rifle was a
good one and Andrew handled it perfectly, never
missing a shot. In the morning four of us each with
