been thinking the same way and if the rest wanted
to continue, he would go with me.
We went back to eamp and told them of our
decision. I think it was Molen h off who then said,
“No; we are not going to part here.” Then they
all agreed to go back. The following morning we
pulled up and turned our faces northward again,
following the same trail that we had taken down,
until we reached the road from Denver to Salt Lake
City. On our return we noticed a bear coming down
in a ravine on the hillside. We stopped our teams
and pulled the harnesses off the mules. Eric
Westerlund and Eric Anderson jumped on the mules and
started after the bear. They intended to rim him
down, but the bear would jump over the creek
when they got close to him and the mules were too
slow in getting across. Consequently the bear gained
on them. If there had been no creek, they would
have succeeded. They gave up the chase and after
that we had no more fun with bears, in fact we did
not see any more.
The next day we were in need of meat and told
Andrew to start out a few minutes ahead of the
wagon, about half a mile. As we were walking down
between two hills, we saw four or five antilopes to
the left of us. 1 said. “Andrew, there :is vour chance.”
I had scarcely spoken the words before he fired. Off
went the herd, for there must have been all of a
dozen of them lying down near the five. Neither
he nor I saw anyone hop up or stagger, and this was
