the first time I saw Andrew miss the mark. He
reloaded his gun. and we walked up the hill opposite.
As we were walking along and talking we chanced
to look back to the place where the antilopes bad
been and as we were higher up the hillside now, we
could sec the space between the sage brush. To our
surprise there lay a large buck unable to move. We
went back and when we came near the animal it
tried to rise, but 1 put my knee on the head to hold
him down while I stuck him to bleed him. We
dressed him and found that the backbone was shot
clear through. Our teams were now coming along
and we put the carcass in a wagon and went our way.
While away from the main road Andrew supplied
us with all the meat we could consume, and we were
fourteen. We could not afford to let anyone else
handle the rifle for fear of wasting ammunition. We
also agreed to get along with one biscuit apiece at
each meal as wc had all the meat and soup we could
consume. After a day or two on that ration Mr.
ta
Moleuhoff came to me and said, “Does this meet and
soup agree with you?” I told him I was feeling all
right. Then he had to confess that he could not
stand it any longer. 1 told him that he could have
my biscuit, too, for a while. I would try to do
without it, and if I still felt well he could continue to
have it. In a day or two he asked me how I was
getting along. I told him T felt no bad effects yet. He
thanked me and said he was feeling ail right now.
Thus we kept on as long as we had access to all the
venison we wanted. The reason we made the bread
allowance so small was to save the flour. We did
not know where or when we could get more. It is
