succeeded in bringing the cow with the oxen into the
corrall. We roped her and sure enough we got a
quart of milk. You cannot imagine how good that
milk tasted. We worked with her half a day trying
to lead her, but she would not go. We tied her to
the wagon, but she would not stir so we gave her up.
She was too wild and evidently she had a calf in the
sage bushes somewhere. As luck would have it we
found one a few days after. We passed a party with
several hundred head of cattle. After passing them
we noticed fresh tracks in the road. Most likely
some animal had broken loose from the herd. It had
rained during the night so the other tracks in the
dust had disappeared. We thought that possibly

sure of tracing the animal, we walked ahead of our
teams. As we came to a small creek the tracks
turned to the right up the creek. There, only a few
rods away from the road, we found the animal in
the brush and our hope did not fail us, for it was a
fine black cow and she too gave milk. This brought
a happy smile to every face. The cow gave us a
gallon of milk a day and was very gentle, following
our wagons without any trouble whatever.

was then covered with snow. Now, after traveling
several hundred miles in a round-about wav, we

finally reached our destination. At that time there
was not much doing at the place. There were two
frame houses under construction, one on each side of
a small dry creek. The building on the north side
