of the creek was enclosed and named Denver. The
one on the south side, the frame of which had just
been raised, was called Aurora. It seemed that there
were two parties wanting different names for the
place,
ft was rather dismal to think of staying here over
the winter which now seemed near at hand. "With
the scant supply of provisions we had left and no
Show of getting any nearer than Omaha, it looked
rather discouraging. After considering the matter
thoroughly, four of us decided to ask for a division
of the outfit and then to start south into New Mexico
to some settled part and go into winter quarters there
till next spring when we would return loaded with
provisions for the following summer. We made
known our decision that we could not see any way
to pass the winter here. Of course they did not
object to dividing up, but they as well as we did
not like the idea of separating. They thought they
would get through the winter some way and maybe
better than we expected. .But we four, Andrew, Eric,
Peter Ilall, and myself, were determined not to stay
there over winter, and, as we thought, lake the chance
of either starving or freezing to death. As our share
we got the three oxen and a wagon. The other three
got the mules and the other wagon and the cow.
We valued the cow at $14 and got our share of that
too. The provisions we divided equally. This done
we were prepared to leave. Tt was harder to go
than we ever expected, not knowing what our fate
would be. Many a tear was shed as we said good
bye. We started up the little creek following the
well worn Santa Fe trail. We had traveled but two
