One evening as we came to a ereek and there
found a fine place to camp, we pitched our eamp
at once although the sun was still up half ail hour.
We had unhitched our teams and pitched our tent,
and built a fire and were preparing our supper.
Along came twelve men on burros. It proved to be
eleven Indians and a big Mexican. I never saw a
larger man. When they came within fifty feet of
our camp they dismounted and prepared to camp,
made their fire, set up their little tents, large enough
to bold one person, and commenced to cook their
corn gruel. We remarked to each other that it was
a very tough looking crowd. “Well boys,” said one,
“that is surely a rough looking gang, but I will go
over to them and have a little talk with them and
show them we are not scared.” He went into our
tent and buckled on a sword and belt he had found
up in the mountains. He put a revolver on each, side
and said, “Now keep your eyes open,” and off he
went to their camp. This man, known as Stover, was
one of the party we first overtook on leaving Denver.
He talked to them about fifteen minutes, then came
back to us and told us that he thought they would
not dare to tackle us for we were as many as they,
but it was best to be on our guard. Supper was
ready. We ate our supper as also they did. We
went into our tents; they did the same. Of course
we did not sleep a wink that night. Mr. Stover’s
object in arming himself the way he did was to show
them that we were .all heavily armed. It may be
that it had some effect for they did not make the
least move to cause any trouble. In the morning we
renewed our fires and prepared our breakfast. They
