cooked their corn gruel again. All they had to eat
was corn meal. When they were through, they
packed their burros and went their way and we
went ours. After we had gone half a mile or so,
we came upon a man who was mowing hay. As he
was close to the road we talked with him and learnt
that lie was an American. We then told him of the
neighbors we had had the night before and asked
him whether he had seen the gang. He said no, but
told us that there were such gangs infesting that
country and that two men had been killed at that
very place only a few days ago. They had been oat
after a load of provisions and were returning to the
mines. Very likely this was the same party that
killed and robbed those two men. The gang certainly
bore the earmarks of the western desparado of
those days.
We had now traveled quite a distance in New
Mexico, but so far had not seen any place attractive
enough in which to spend the winter. So we
continued on our way passing through several small
towns or villages. We found no place that was
suitable for stopping. We decided to go as far as
Al-buquerque at any rate. This town was reported
to be quite a place. We now had the experience of
traveling three days without water. We did not
learn af our needs in time to provide ourselves with
a water supply when crossing the stream, although
we carried casks with us for that purpose. Not
knowing the country, we did not even try to increase
our speed, at least not the first day, hut took our
usual noon-hour rest, thinking that we would surely
reach a stream by night: Ahout sundown we were
