settlers as their lives and homes were safe from the
attack and massacre by the Indians.

Quite a large number of our Swedish pioneers
enlisted as volunteers in the Civil War. The follow-

mg went, out to serve their country of adoption:
John Dalander, C. J. Anderson, Jöns Peterson, Lars
Peterson, Gust Larson, James Anderson, John
Sjögren, Eric Söderlund, Chas. Nelson, Frank
Nelson, M. Johnson, Peter Peterson, Olof Peterson and
A- J. Swanson. Of all these only A. J. Swanson is
living today. In the fall of 1860 a Lincoln flag pole
was raised at Swede Point. This pole was 100 feet
in height, composed of three lengths spliced together
&nd banded with heavy iron bands. From its top
the stars and stripes was floating to the breeze
over Swede Point. It could be seen for many miles
out in the country. This pole was cut and hauled by
Erie and Swen Dalander and C, J. Cassel. There
was a great festivity on that day when it was raised.
People came from 20 miles around. At noon Swede
Point had an old style barbecue. In the timber just
outside town, everybody was welcome to help
them-selves to the roasted ox and roasted pigs. During
the night of March 8, 1861, this flag pole was bored

flown by some unknown party. It fell to be raised
uo more.

In 1857 there was a movement to organize a new
county which was to comprise three townships in

°°uc county, two in Polk county, one in Dallas
county and one in Story county. Swede Point was to

6 the county seat in this new county. Prominent
eiLzens met from these townships to make plans for
