organization. In looking up the law it was found
that some legislative action was necessary. At this
meeting Mr. Hornbeek was appointed to bring this
matter before the state assembly at Iowa City. Mr.
Hornbeek had to make this trip to Iowa City by
team. The roads were very bad and he was delayed
on his trip. When he arrived the state assembly had
just adjourned the day before. It was then too late
for auy legislative action. The Swedish pioneers
who took a very active part in this movement were:
C. J. Cassel, Eric Dalander, Swen Dalander, John
Dalander, Peter Anderson and John Anderson.
Up to 1881 Swede Point was an inland town.
Railroads were built both on east and west; but no
prospect for Swede Point, hi early days merchants
hauled their goods from Des Moines. Farmers hauled
their grain and drove their cattle and hogs to either
Boone or Des Moines, Later when a railroad was
built through Sheldahl, seven miles east of Swede
Point, this town became the marketing place. In
1881 the Milwaukee railroad was built through
Swede Point. This was the main line coming from
the east and going west. The railroad company had,
however, surveyed a line several miles from Swede
Point. Through the influence of Rev. A. Sundberg
and John Bilsland the railroad company was
induced to change the route and build through the
town. At this time another railroad was built from
Des Moines through Swede Point and w’cnt on as
far as Boone, north. At this time the railroad
company circulated a petition among the people asking
to change the name of the town to Madrid. From
that time the name Swede Point was blotted out
