would point back to the days of our early Swedish
settlers at Swede Point, and it would speak in silent
voices to coming generations of the hardships and
the achievements of these Swedish pioneers. This
monument should be called the Swede Point Swedish
Pioneer Monument. The park should be called the
Dalander Park in memorial to Mrs. Anna Dalander,
who was the first owner of the tract of land on which
the former Swede Point, or the present Madrid is
now located.
NORMANDY OF A THOUSAND YEARS.

Not very long ago Normandy celebrated its one
thousand years’ anniversary amidst festivities and
rejoicing. With the exception, however, of France
rtseif, and the Scandinavian kingdoms, few countries
paid any marked attention to the celebration, and yet
it meant the commemoration of an event which
thousands of years ago stirred history and in a great
measure brought about the termination of the Viking
ravages in Europe.
To the Scandinavian peoples the celebration meant
the revival of a heroic past not easily overshadowed
by the centuries. It might therefore be of some
interest to take a brief view over the historic province
of Normandy and its people.
Normandy of today is but a historic expression.
To be really modern we must say that the
departments of Manche, Calvados, Eure, Seine Inferieure
and Orue, occupy the province formerly known as
