strife and jealousy had not gained a foothold
among them. They were members of one great
household. The welfare of each individual and
family was of equal interest to them all. If any one
became sick or in need his neighbors did not wait to
be asked to lend a helping hand. If a new log cabin
was to be raised, every one in the neighborhood
turned out to help, ’he women went along to
prepare the meals by an open camp fire or in the
nearest log cabin. If anyone butchered a hog, beef, or
deer, his neighbors were sure to receive a piece of
the steak.

The home was a busy scene, where the housewife
and her daughters sheared the sheep, washed and
carded the woo) which was spun into yarn and
woven into cloth for garments for herself and
family. From morn to eve could be heard the whir of
the spinning wheel and the monotonous strokes of
the loom. Out in the field the farmer was busy
breaking the sod or cutting the grain with his heavy
cradle. Out in the timber the strokes of the
woodman’s ax echoed from the glade.
How appropriate it would be to raise a monument
in memorial to these Swedish pioneers. It would be
one of the landmarks in the history of the Swedish
people in America. The place for such a monument
would be that little square on which the Swedish
Lutheran Church stood before it was moved. This
little spot surrounded by those trees that were
planted by these pioneers could be made into a little
park with rounded walks and flowery beds. Under
those shady trees settees could be placed, while from
the center the monument with its tapering finger
