THE MASS OP THE DEAD.

Onee during a terrific storm the sacristan of Notre
Dame La Pallet was awakened at midnight by the
mass bell. Thinking that he had overslept himself
he rushed into the church and found to his great
surprise a priest before the altar and the entire church
filled with fishermen.

As he looked at the congregation it suddenly
dawned oil his mind that none of the men resembled
the villagers usually attending church. And more,—
he could distinguish the faces of several fishermen
who had perished in the sea long ago. Transfixed
with awe the sacristan now plainly noticed how
pallid the congregation looked. Every man was a
ghostly fisher, at some time or other buried beneath
the waves. Again and again the ghost priest
tried to lift the host to his lips, but it slipped away.
Then turning to the sacristan he made a most pitiful
plea that some one might say the mass for him. A
dull groan rose from the ghost congregation and in
an instant the scene had vanished.

THE CASTLE OP ROBERT THE DEVIL.

Not far from Rouen, on the Seine, stands the ruin
of an old castle, onco the property of Robert the
Magnificent, or the Devil, Duke William’s father.
The ruin looks picturesque, clad in ivy and moss.
Under the castle lies a dark and hideous cave. When
night comes, says the tradition, Robert’s voice can
be distinguished like a mighty roar in his
superhuman efforts to free himself from the tormenting
evil spirits. Woe unto the stranger who must pass
the castle at night or has forgotten himself among
the ruins after sunset.
