ST. RO MAIN AND THE DRAGON.

At some distance from Rouen was formerly a large
and dangerous morass, the home of a horrid dragon.
The monster was so enormous that whenever he
chanced to take a bath in the Seine the river almost
flooded the town. Fortunately, this happened but
once a year. While the cathedral was being built
the dragon eame to town and began to rub himself
against the high tower with a result that it toppled
over, killing many laborers in its fall.

The beast was said to have a particular taste for
young, sweet girls. Hence no home or girl in the
entire neighborhood, or in Rouen was safe from the
dragon. The people turned in their anxiety to St.
Romain, asking him for protection. The saint
listened to their supplications, went to the dragon’s den,
accompanied by a liberated felon, and charmed the
monster with his crucifix. Afterwards the dangerous
beast was led into the city and burned publicly on
the market-place.

THE LOVERS’ MOUNTAIN.

In the valley of Pistre rises a mountain, near
which a powerful king had built a city many hundred
years ago. As his young daughter grew up, lovers
came in plenty but the princess refused them all.
She and her father had agreed upon to love each
other until death and this frustrated all attempts. But
the people were not satisfied with such conditions,
and insisted on the princess’s marriage until the king
had to yield. Yet he decided to withstand the plans
as far as he could. Instead of looking out for some
prince or king, he invited any young man in or out
the country to seek his daughter’s hand. The only
